Player retention rules state that all eight teams could retain a total of five previous team players, and only three can be retained during the current retention season. The other limitations on personnel retention were: each team could retain three Indian players, two foreign players, and two uncapped Indian players. The salary deduction for every retained player from the franchise's salary purse was stipulated to be ₹15 crores, ₹11 crores, and ₹7 crores if three players were retained; ₹12.5 crore and ₹8.5 crore if two players were retained; and ₹12.5 crore if only one player was retained.
