The mega event of IPL 2018 is going to start from 7th April. Player retention rules state that all eight teams could retain a total of five previous team players, and only three can be retained during the current retention season. There is also a right that each team possesses and that is of three right-to-match cards (two, in case the franchise retained three players during the retention time).
The other limitations on personnel retention were: each team could retain three Indian players, two foreign players, and two uncapped Indian players. The salary deduction for every retained player from the franchise's salary purse was stipulated to be ₹15 crores, ₹11 crores, and ₹7 crores if three players were retained; ₹12.5 crore and ₹8.5 crore if two players were retained; and ₹12.5 crore if only one player was retained. For retaining an uncapped player, salary deduction was set at ₹3 crores.
Chennai and Rajasthan, two franchises which are playing after a two-year ban in 2018, have right to retain players from their 2015 squads who did not become part of the squads of any of the other six teams in 2017. This means that Chennai have 13 players to choose from whereas Rajasthan has 6 players to retain from.
The franchises submitted their retention lists by 4 January 2018. It was broadcast live on Star Sports, making it the first time that player retention was telecasted.
